About
- The Helms
The Agenda: We as a band finally have some sort of clue to what we are going to do. Now that we’ve been together for 10 years, we have an agenda and a direction. Over the years we have had many name & style changes. We Played many local and further flung gigs around Scotland but soon grew quite bored of Small Ayr and its zero tolerance for live music. Next we became “Philo Beddoe” and again the sound evolved. Most of us grew up listening to metal and grunge bands so it felt comfortable at the time that we could rock out for a while. But again with a lack of area’s (decent areas) to play in Ayr we decided we basically couldn’t be arsed playing gigs for a while. Last autumn we managed to acquire a brand new rehearsal space of our own and decided to drop anything we had done before and throw the rule book out the window. We needed a new name, which had always been a problem coming up with and sticking to it.

To our surprise we came up with “The Helms” (I think Tommy came up with it over a pint) Coming from “The Band” drummer and vocalist Levon Helm, to all of us it had a cool element about it. So we had no material but somehow the songs have just come about rather easily. A new laid back Alt-Country/ Folk rock sound with a bunch of covers from some of our favourite songs or artists to fall into the mix is what we have just started to record at our Helm H.Q. Titled “Songs Long Lost” the original material will be recorded and probably put on iTunes for sale. The titles of tracks written are : November Sun, Echoes, Hold On, Sometimes, Longest Summers/Darkest Winters, The Storm, Cold Dead Hand Blues, Girl From A Small Town, The Words You Say, Come Back Home, Clockwork, Two and Way Back When. But also we want to record the covers that we enjoy playing and these are The Band’sThe Weight and Up On Cripple Creek, The Jayhawks Blue and Trouble, The Yardbirds Heart full of Soul and For Your Love, Golden Smog’s Fear Of Falling, Creedence Clearwater Revivals Proud Mary, The Who’s Substitute, Pearl Jam’s Indifference, The Beatles Rain and Eleanor Rigby, Neil Young’s Big Green Country and Rocking In The Free World.

We also plan on starting to play some smaller venues around the local scene, the idea of them being close and personal has become rather appealing. PaulMcConnell.
